Robert Loveridge, a science teacher at The Sir Robert Woodard Academy, has been named the winner of the 2026 School Biology Teacher of the Year Award by the Royal Society of Biology.
The award recognises the UK’s leading secondary school biology teachers at the forefront of teaching excellence, who play a vital role in educating and inspiring the next generation of biologists.
Robert, who has taught science for 35 years, was nominated in secret by his fellow science teacher James Gardiner.
Speaking after the announcement, Robert said: “It was an amazing and humbling experience. The whole process was a real validation and confirmation that I am still doing the right job, and a good job, teaching biology after 35 years.”
He added: “It gave me time to reflect on all the things I still try to build into my teaching to keep students curious about the natural world, to help them protect it, appreciate it and be part of it. I feel deeply honoured.”
The judges commented: “Through his steadying and calming presence, Robert has inspired generations of students to love and appreciate the power of science, biology, and nature. His classroom is a shrine to the natural world, covered in diverse plants, fossils, and models, as well as a vertical gardening station for propagating food which he supplies to the canteen staff for use. He is a mentor to other colleagues in the science department and runs the school’s eco club, helping to drive the school to contribute to a greener world.”
Kieran Scanlon, Principal at the Sir Robert Woodard Academy said: "I am delighted that Rob's passion and commitment to his subject and our students has been recognised in this way. He deserves the recognition and myself and our whole school community are very proud of him."
